Curious about plastic surgery?

MEMBER OF ASPS

Dr. Marcus L. Peterson is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. (ASPS) You can rest assured your surgeon is qualified to perform your surgery. The mission of ASPS is to advance quality care to plastic surgery patients by requiring high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery.

MEMBER OF ASAPS
  • The requirements for membership in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) are designed to encourage application by trained and experienced plastic surgeons who concentrate their practices in performing cosmetic plastic surgery of the face and the entire body. ASAPS membership remains an exclusive privilege for those surgeons who possess the necessary qualifications. Only about one-quarter of all American Board of Plastic Surgery certified surgeons have been accepted into ASAPS membership. Physicians who have been trained in specialties other than plastic surgery are not eligible for membership in ASAPS.

THE DANGERS OF PLASTIC SURGERY TOURISM
  • We’ve seen a rise in the number of people traveling abroad to have plastic surgery. The cheaper costs may be tempting but consider the risks. Plastic surgery is best performed by a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon.
CHOOSING A PLASTIC SURGEON

If you are considering cosmetic or plastic surgery, do not overlook the importance of choosing the right physician. Consider these tips when researching your potential plastic surgeon:

Make sure the surgeon is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery.

All plastic surgeons are not alike. Plastic surgeons that are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and are uniquely qualified and specially trained. They have been proven to provide the best patient care and have the lowest rates of complications.

Do not assume that all doctors who claim to be “board certified” have the same training. Be sure that your doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Don’t be fooled by other professional-sounding boards.

If a doctor is certified by the ABPS this means that they are certified in plastic surgery and have met the following requirements:

  • They have earned a degree from an accredited medical school
  • They have completed 3-5 years of general surgery
  • They have completed 2-3 years of supervised residency in plastic surgery
  • They have had at least 2 years of professional practice
  • They have passed rigorous written and oral exams (only about 70 percent of physicians who take the test pass it)
